January 2008

Thursday 3rd January
Social Sip
7 pm Mark's Place, corner Grattan and Swanston Streets, Carlton
21 people, the largest turnout for a long time

Sunday 6th January
Brisbane Ranges
Geoff Jones leading
10 am West Gate Shell Servo

Geoff will lead us over the West Gate Bridge taking the third Werribee exit to avoid as much of suburbia as possible before heading off towards the You Yangs and Anakie. The roads are pretty straight up until this point but from now on become flowing uphill sweepers as we traverse the Brisbane Ranges on the west side. On to Maude and Meredith for morning tea at the BP servo.

After the break we'll pick up the twisty and steep Durdidwarrah road across to the east side of the Ranges and back to Anakie. Now we'll start heading north picking up the old club hill climb road up Mt Wallace. You'll marvel at the poor state of the road - gravel and potholes on every corner - and wonder how we ever held time trials up here. On to Ballan, Greendale, Trentham and Lancefield for lunch.

The final leg will pick up Pyalong, Broadford, Strath Creek and Kinglake West. Expect around 380 km of varied roads.

The weather forecast looks to be relatively mild after 35 and 37 degrees predicted for Friday and Saturday, so be there!

12 bikes, 12 people, 420 km, 24 deg.
Incident: minor cosmetic on Broadford to Strath Creek steep downhill plunge; cracked engine cover, taped up, rideable. Rider fine.

Break up at Kinglake West after 180 km of easy paced riding. An option is to finish at Marysville, depending on the weather and keeness of the participants. Enjoy the view!

Sunday 20th January

Ben Warden leading
10 am Berwick

Off to Dargo to visit Dan and Maggie to sample the "best hamburgers in the world". Maggie really cares about the ingredients and perfect cooking, something not often sampled at fast food outlets these days. Of course, there will be excellent roads to get the juices flowing on the way. Expect around 420 km of roads rarely travelled with almost no highways. Good tyres essential.
Ride will not suit inexperienced riders; not recommended for first time Club riders.

Friday 25th - Monday 28th January
Australia Day Weekend, Towong
Bookings essential, limited places
9.30 am Yarck

The Committee has booked accommodation at the NSW Sport and Recreation Centre in Jindabyne. This is lodge style accommodation with 2 beds per room (6 rooms) with communal bathroom facilities, and a large kitchen/living area with a big screen TV. We stayed there on the Melbourne Cup Weekend Epic and were so impressed with the cost, quality and food, we thought we had better come back!

The Australia Day holiday falls on Monday 28th of January. Given the distances involved (700 km on the first day and last days), a four day weekend allows us to take full advantage of the great location. The plan is to ride up on Friday, ride around the Snowy Mountains Saturday and Sunday, and return to Melbourne on Monday. This means three nights accommodation. You'll need to take annual leave for the Friday. Typically temperatures are in the 40's at this time of year, but at this altitude the temperatures will be at least 10 degrees cooler making for ideal riding conditions.

As usual, this special event is offered on a strictly first come, first served basis. Preference will be given to members. A $58 deposit is required. The deposit buys three nights accommodation. Meals are not being offered this time so we will have to eat out or head to the supermarket. All you need is your toothbrush, a change of clothes and near new tyres. Street legal, race replica tyres will not last much more than two days so regular road tyres are a more sensible option, unless you are prepared to change them.

12 places booked, 12 people paid (14/1/08) Still possible to come but alternative accommodation (on-site even) will have to be sourced.

Starters include Ben, Nic J., Rob L., Jean E., Ron and Julie J., Tony G., Geoff J., Cliff P., Peter F., Misho Z. and Pina G.

12 bikes, 1 car, 14 people, 2500 plus km, weather perfect

Sunday 23rd March
Yarram via Balook
Ben Warden leading
10 am Berwick
Ride will not suit inexperienced riders; not recommended for first time Club riders.

The Labertouche Jindivick road has been resurfaced and was particularly nasty the last time I visited, limiting routes to Moe for the first stop (late starters take note). We'll stay north of the highway until Morwell when we'll head south to Churchill and up into the mountains to Balook. On to Yarram for lunch and then around through Toora and the wind farms heading for Foster and Leongatha. Home via Korumburra and Drouin. Expect around 500 km for the day.

Sunday 6th April
Eildon via Torbreck River Road
Peter Jones leading
10 am Yarra Glen

Peter has planned a regulation ride for his first lead with no surprises. From Yarra Glen we'll do the usual Chum Creek and Myers Creeks roads to Healesville, followed by the Black Spur and Marysville for first stop and a splash of fuel for thirsty Suzukis and VTRs. Then on to Buxton and Taggerty, looking out marked police bikes on this highway section before reaching Taggerty and the Jamieson Road turnoff. Here the twisties begin in earnest with 37 km of uninterrupted corners. Look out for deer hunters along here. We continue till the end of the bitumen, regrouping just over the last bridge. The return trip is back along the same road, now with more confidence, and in to Eildon for lunch. After lunch we'll head across the spectacular Skyline Road through Fraser National Park down to Alexandra, then around to Merton and Yea before the final fling to Kinglake West across Junction Hill. Expect around 350 km for the day.

Ride will not suit inexperienced riders; not recommended for first time Club riders.

Ian Payne/Paul Southwell leading
10 am Berwick

This is an overnight ride with shared accommodation at the Dargo Inn at $75 per person per night. The tariff includes breakfast and main meal. Ian Payne will lead us from Berwick on the first day because Paul is attending the Sandown Ride Day and will catch up with us later that night. Route includes a trip into Licola and back to check out the bush fire and flood ravaged countryside. These roads are very abrasive and very twisty, a certain combination leading to extreme tyre wear. Hence good tyres are mandatory. To secure a bed deposit $40 into the Club coffers. Expect around 750 km for the weekend.

9 bikes, 9 people, 595 km, 22 deg.
Incident: Marty crashed (minor cosmetic) heading for Sydney after he left us - black ice over Mt Hotham; maybe ribs, bike rideable but banged up

Ern Reeders was initially down to lead this one but due to licence points pressure has opted to ride sparingly. Hence, a leader is still required. A possible route is Flowerdale, Strath Creek, Broadford, Glenaroua and Seymour for morning tea. Then on to Highlands, Caveat, Gobur, Merton, Strathbogie and Euroa for late lunch at the servo. The return route could be up to Violet Town, down through Boho and back to Strathbogie, Caveat, Highlands, Yea (regroup) and Kinglake West. Expect around 400 km for the day with a select group of riders as a few of the regular riders will be sampling Dargo and central Gippsland wares. If anyone would like assistance in planning with maps, etc, contact Ben.

Sunday 20th April
Walhalla
Trevor Harris leading
10 am Yarra Glen

In Trevor's words: "Leaving Yarra Glen it's the direct route to Healesville and then on to Don Valley; a quick zig-zag to Parkinsons Road and we come out at Gladysdale. Right to Powelltown and Noojee for a regroup and rest (Note: no fuel available here). Then on to Moe for fuel and the lunch stop - bakeries, SubWay, etc. Next Tyers, turning left to head along some nice open roads to Walhalla. After getting bailed up by the Old Folks ("I had a Triumph when I was your age...") we will then - if the day suits - head out to the Thompson Dam to check on Melbourne's primary water storage. Either way, it's back to Moe for fuel, then via the Old Sale Road to Jindivick and Longwarry North where we'll break up near the Princes Freeway. And then home! Around 350 km."

Friday 25th April,(ANZAC Day public holiday)
Grand Ridge Road (Gippsland)
Ben Warden leading
10 am Berwick

If you are not supporting the ANZAC Day Parade down Swanston St to the war memorial shrine on this public holiday, come for a ride exploring Gippsland generally following the Grand Ridge Road until it becomes dirt around Boolarra South. Ride will follow usual Sunday ride format but with an exploratory bent. So don't be surprised if we check out a few roads and see if they have been tarred possibly resulting in more U-turns than usual. Expect around 380 km for the day.

19 bikes, 19 people, 25 deg., 435 km

Sunday 27th April
Gembrook
Ian Payne leading
10 am Berwick

After a leisurely stop we'll proceed east through Crossover towards Moe on the Old Sale Road picking up the road north to Willow Grove and back to Icy Creek and Noojee. Depending on time, we'll probably push on to Powelltown and Hoddles Creek to regroup at Gembrook for a late lunch. Unless you are familiar with the area, like Ian is, there is not much point in describing the route other than to say Ian will pick the eyes out of the best roads in the area passing through places such as Emerald, Yellingbo, Macclesfield and Upper Pakenham. We'll finish near Hallam after 250 km of interesting and varied roads, often travelled in the reverse direction. You won't be bored.

Sunday 18th May
Loch
Ben Warden leading
10 am Berwick

There are so many good roads south of Loch, the challenge is to connect them all up. The route heading towards Kilcunda with the sea appearing on the horizon, sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right, sometimes straight ahead, always proves popular and confusing! It is, paradoxically, the middle of nowhere, yet never far from home. Great variety of roads with the emphasis on tight up hill twisties and medium speed sweepers on the flat or undulating. A bit of Phillip Island race track, a bit of the Reefton, without the camouflaged policemen hiding in trees. Expect 350 km for the day, or more if the weather and participants demand. Conversely, easy to shorten if the weather is miserable. Be there.

8 bikes, 8 people, 320 km, 15 deg. cold, no rain, little wind despite forecast
Incident: Aaron (2nd ride) ZX9, minor cosmetic (cracked engine cover, losing oil, retired at Loch.

12 bikes, 15 people, 220 km, 14 degrees, fine

Sunday 25th May
Pyalong
Paul Southwell leading
10 am Whittlesea

Paul has figured out a way of connecting most of the good roads in the area. From Whittlesea we'll head straight for Junction Hill and Yea, turn left and pick up the Highlands road and back to Seymour for morning tea at the bakery after 115 km. After what could be lunch for some we'll head off to Glenaroua and Pyalong along the main drag which gradually becomes more undulating and twisty. On to Emu Flat and across to Burke and Wills Track and down to Lancefield for the second break - fuel and food at the corner shop. Final hop back to Broadford, Strath Creek and Kinglake West along only good roads. Look out for kangaroos. The roads are grippy wet or dry, so don't be put off by the weather. Expect 280 km for the day, fairly dramatic tyre wear and plenty of light left to sweep up the leaves or watch the footy.

19 bikes, 19 people, 310 km, 18 degrees, fine

June 2008

Sunday 1st June
Gembrook
Ian Payne leading
10 am Berwick

Ian was crook the last time he attempted to lead this ride so we thought we would give him another shot. From Berwick we'll head north from Berwick along the good link roads to Longwarry North, picking up the Jindivick Road to Neerim South for morning tea. After a leisurely stop we'll proceed east through Crossover towards Moe on the Old Sale Road, then north to Willow Grove and back to Icy Creek and Noojee. Depending on time, we'll push on to Powelltown and Hoddles Creek to regroup at Gembrook for a late lunch. Ian will pick the eyes out of the best roads in the area passing through places such as Emerald, Yellingbo, Macclesfield and Upper Pakenham. We'll finish near Hallam after 270 km of interesting and varied roads, often travelled in the reverse direction. You won't be bored.

23 bikes, 23 people, 16 degrees., some fog, 340 km

Coal Creek Historical Site, Korumburra
Ben Warden leading
10 am Berwick

Marty is unable to lead this ride due to a recent back injury. But we'll visit the famous coal diggings, learn a bit about our Victorian history and the money you spend not riding will easily cover the entrance fee. The plan is to spend morning tea at Loch (if you are chasing the ride), then head over to lunch at Coal Creek, then head home via more good roads. No exploring today, only a selection of the best roads in west Gippsland. Expect around 250 km for the day.

On to Yarram for fuel along very tight and twisty sections of the Grand Ridge Road (all bitumen now) before returning to Traralgon via the Hyland Highway, a fantastic 55 km of uninterrupted flowing sweepers through the Great Dividing Range. We'll probably regroup at Tyers before pushing on to Longwarry North and break-up after 380 km or so. Good tyres essential. This ride will not suit inexperienced riders or first time Club riders.

Sunday 29th June
Thompson's Dam
Paul Southwell leading
10 am Yarra Glen An easy Saturday ride followed by a demanding Sunday ride should cater for all tastes over the weekend. Given the start and finishing points the route is fairly self evident. Expect Noojee for morning tea and now fuel, though no Premium. On through Hill End and left directly to Thompsons Dam. Back to Rawson for lunch, or maybe press on to Tyers and Moe for a late lunch and fuel. The return trip will likely include the Old Sale Road and Jindivick to break-up at Longwarry North near the freeway. An alternative is to work our way back through the Neerims and Nayook to finish at Powelltown. Trevor often runs this ride in the reverse direction, another option. Around 290 km of brilliant roads for the day.

More good road to Pyalong, Lancefield (quick fuel stop), Burke and Wills Track, Kyneton, Spring Hill, Glen Lyon and Daylesford for lunch after another 140 km. Hopefully in the middle of winter parking will be less of an issue - dress warmly as Daylesford is very cold. Homewood bound we'll head east to Trentham, then down through Blackwood, Greendale, Myrniong, Bacchus Marsh and Toolern Vale to break up at Diggers Rest (105 km). Expect around 335 km for the day on some of the best roads close to Melbourne.

From Berwick we'll do a loop up through Beaconsfield for a little fun before the straight slog down towards Mornington.

After lunch back around Red Hill wine country again to break up at the Moorooduc Cool Store close to the freeway.

Emphasis on slow, low stress, suitable for learner riders, pillion passengers and/or guys getting back into riding after a break without the pressure of keeping up or long distances. A social ride with riding the secondary aim but enough to whet the appetite for more on a Sunday.

Expect a leisurely 200 km for the day.

Castlemaine Fuel Economy
Ben Warden leading
10 am Westgate Shell Servo, outbound

First you fill up to overflowing, then we ride to Castlemaine, then we fill up again. The person who puts the lowest amount of fuel in wins a membership (or a refund). Obviously we have to wrap some rules around this simple scenario to avoid unsafe riding situations (lying on the tank, travelling below the speed limit, coasting down hill with the engine off). So, if the rear rider passes you, you are out! Must maintain the legal limit. Rear rider will be the final judge. First stop is Woodend for morning tea. Lot's of good roads so the temptation to go "at a normal club pace" will be hard to resist anyway. Return trip via Chewton, Sutton Grange, Mia Mia, Lancefield, Romsey and Wallan. Expect around 400 km for the day.

9 bikes, 10 people, 300 km, 12 deg., either raining or drizzle/fog whole day. liff (GSXR1000) won economy ride and wins 08/09 membership.

Then up the Korumburra - Warragul Road and on to Crossover, Neerim South and back to Jindivick. If the ride is going well, we may divert at the Old Sale Road and head through Hill End and back into Noojee with the option of heading home via Powelltown or back to the highway via Jindivick. Expect around 320 km for the day.

Down to Woodend for lunch then south to Blackwood and Greendale to Bacchus Marsh before breaking up at Diggers Rest, just off the Calder Highway, only 15 minutes from the city. Expect around 250 easy kilometres for the day.

Geoff Jones leading
10 am Westgate Shell Servo, outbound

The Jones clan have very generously offered to once again open their home and provide lunch for the participants on the day's ride. The Club is very grateful for such hospitality.

The route through the Brisbane Ranges will be similar to previous rides with first stop at Meredith after negotiating Werribee, Anakie and the west side of the Brisbane Ranges. After morning tea we'll scoot down the east side to Anakie completing a loop before heading north to Bacchus Marsh. After these few straight roads we'll continue parallel to the Western Highway through Myrniong before striking north to Greendale, Blackwood and Trentham. Then we'll meander our way around tighter back roads to Spring Hill before emerging at Woodend (fuel) before the challenging ride over Mt Macedon and down into Gisborne.

The ride will finish with a spectacular (judging by previous efforts) lunch provided courtesy of Melissa McKenna (nee Jones) with mum Val's help. Members unable to make the ride are welcome but should ring Melissa on mobile 0407 888 597 or fixed line 542 88 767 to assist in catering. The address is 12 Kurung Crt Gisborne. The ride will continue after lunch breaking up in Bulla, some 15 minutes from the city via the Tullamarine Freeway.

Saturday 23rd August
Lancefield Hotel
Ride suitable for Pillion, P-Platers and Learners
Trevor Harris leading
10 am Whittlesea

In (modified) Trevor's words: "Three short legs at a relaxed pace. From Whittlesea it's north to Kinglake West, Flowerdale, Strath Creek and into the main street of Broadford for our first break. Next it's onwards to Pyalong and down to Lancefield, after travelling about 120 km from Whittlesea, for lunch at the Lancefield Hotel, 2 High Street, Lancefield, opposite the Shell petrol station. They serve lunch between 12 and 2 pm so we'll aim to be there about 12:30 pm. After lunch we will head back to Whittlesea via Cobar, Romsey and Wallan. Expect around 200 km for the ride."

Pillions should be aware that it is very cold at this time of year, particularly in central Victoria, and dress accordingly. Water proof clothing (wind proof) is almost mandatory. Note: the rider can afford slightly less layers as he is "working" and thus stays a little warmer. The pillion cops an icy blast and must just sit there.

5 bikes, 6 people, 210 km, 12 deg.
7 extra people at pub

Sunday 24th August
Maldon
Paul Southwell leading
10 am Whittlesea

If there is time we'll head up to the fire tower just out of town and take in the views. After wandering the town and consuming lunch while window shopping at the various specialty shops we'll start to head home. The route will include Newstead, Daylesford, Spring Hill, Tylden, Woodend, Romsey and Wallan. Expect around 340 km for the day.

The route could be influenced by rain and Paul may end up running the ride backwards with the first stop at Lancefield. Either way, interesting roads.
